My Top Ten Books of 2012

Hey guys. It’s that time of year again when everyone is making their top ten favourite lists. Whether it is films, books, cars, toys or games there is always loads around at this time of year!

So, to slightly jump on the proverbial bandwagon, here’s my top ten books that I have read in 2012…

No. 10 Conqueror, Conn Iggulden.

In at number 10 is Conqueror by Conn Iggulden. I didn’t feel it was the best book in the series but it was a good book to draw this series to a close, leaving an open ending in case Iggulden wanted to return to it at a later date.

No. 9 Tangled Ties to a Manatee, Kalen Cap.

This was a really good book. I thought it was really unique and Cap had put a lot of effort and detail into the various plots within the novel. I can’t wait to see if he will be bringing out any other books in 2013.

No. 8 Strategos, Born in the Borderlands, Gordon Doherty.

Great introduction into Doherty’s work. Extremely detailed about a time where there is not many primary sources left. I chose this book over Legionary because I read it first.

No. 7 The Casual Vacancy, J. K. Rowling.

I just read that this book won Goodreads’s book of the year for fiction. I don’t know if it was that good… but it was an enjoyable read and it was nice to see Rowling writing and making a success of her books after Harry Potter.

No. 6 The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins.

This book blew my mind and like most people who read the first book, I became addicted with the series. However, I didn’t enjoy the movie but am looking forward to seeing how Catching Fire is portrayed in the next film.

No. 5 Falstaff's Big Gamble, Hank Quense..

A parody of two of Shakespeare’s best known plays; Hamlet and Othello but made funny! What more is there to say?

No 4. Fevre Dream, George R. R. Martin.

Wow this book was so good! If you’re a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire (and I mean who isn’t?) you should really check this book out because it deserves to be as well known and loved as A Game of Thrones.

No. 3 1356, Bernard Cornwell.

Cornwell finally returns to the story of Thomas of Hookton. The archer’s tale is as great as ever. I hope that in 2013 Cornwell goes back to his other well-loved character Nate Starbuck!

No. 2 Wolf dawn, Susan Cartwright.

I really can’t praise this book enough. It’s the epic sci-fi novel that I was dreaming of and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series Wolf Revenge!

No. 1 Prince of Thorns, Mark Lawrence.

Wolf Dawn came close but the Prince of Thorns just tipped the balance as my favourite book of 2012. The main character Jorg is so evil, making him one of the most memorable characters I have ever read. I also love how Lawrence bases the series in the future but makes it seem like the past. If you like fantasy, you should definitely check this book and its sequel the King of Thorns out!
